Member Spotlight: Jim Hasse
40-year member of IABC/Madison

jimhassepicDuring the 1970s and 80s, IABC/Madison provided me with an opportunity to stretch my volunteer wings as newsletter editor, board secretary and program chairperson and to grow into the relatively new field of business communications.

This always-dynamic group provided the platform for my IABC participation on a regional and national level, and I eventually became a member of senior management as vice president of corporate communication for what is now Foremost Farms USA, Baraboo, WI.

In this current economy, organizations are:
~ Developing more project-based work (within and outside of the work site), sometimes assigning full-time employees to work with temporary workers.
~ Outsourcing key functions to teams of independent contractors.
~ Dealing with employee turnover rates which are often at historic highs.

That puts a premium on communicators who can help senior management quickly and effectively gain buy-in into a corporate vision, a group mission, a value statement and an operating mode among a variety of stakeholders. Such groups are often in a constant state of flux and, at times, may be outside of management’s direct control.

It’s a challenging but rewarding time to be a business communicator -- one in which I can’t imagine how I would cope without the learning environment and community wisdom provided by IABC/Madison.
