  Professional development

All of our local monthly meetings are focused on relevant professional development topics based on current best practices in business communication. IABC International offers a multitude of opportunities to help communicators do their jobs better in our rapidly-changing world. Click on the links below for more resources.

The region that IABC-Madison belongs to, Pacific Plains, supports the leaders and members of the region’s IABC chapters with resources and professional development opportunities. Its goal is to foster a collegial network of professionals engaged in all aspects of corporate communication and to extend opportunities to members to expand their leadership skills and experience by participating at the local, regional and international level.

Pacific Plains embraces 22 chapters in 14 states including scores of members at large who live outside local chapter boundaries. This geographic sweep provides a wide network of colleagues for sharing ideas, asking advice and celebrating successes.

IABC teleseminars bring affordable professional development events to busy communicators all over the world. Teleseminars are live, 60-minute training sessions broadcast over regular telephone lines. For one registration fee, participants can invite as many of their colleagues and staff members as they want to listen in.
Presenters for the 2007 teleseminars include Tudor Williams, ABC (Writing the Strategic Communication Plan), Shel Holtz, ABC (Communicating on the Read-Write Web), Wilma Mathews, ABC (PR 101: The Essential Guidebook), Marc Schumann, ABC (Using Communication to Engage Employees), and others.

Notes from IABC Madison chapter member Heide Keith on the 2007 International Conference

The evaluations are in. The conference in New Orleans ranks as the highest rated IABC International Conference to date. A post-conference email from IABC provided additional resources such as the following, which provide highlights of the event:

  • Speaker interviews hosted by Shel Holtz, ABC and Neville Hobson, ABC at In Session, IABC's conference blog and podcasts. Click here.
  • Video clips from our pre-conference build with Habitat for Humanity are now online. Click here.

I went to the International Conference with high expectations and IABC delivered! Members from our chapter spoke highly of past conferences with comments such as "very professional" and "a great learning experience." I found the caliber of speakers, along with the opportunity to network with communicators from around the globe, to be impressive. The topics were diverse with presentation formats ranging from lecture to interactive. There were so many choices that I often had difficulty choosing between the multiple sessions offered in any given timeframe.

Another standout worth sharing is the way conference participants were treated. The IABC staff worked hard to ensure a positive experience for all. The only area I cited for improvement on the conference survey was to allow more flexible access to the computer stations for checking email. Maybe that was a good thing - as I enjoyed many conversations with my colleagues instead.

Planning has already begun for IABC 2008 in New York City. Check the IABC International website for program and registration information starting in December.
